DIY WOOD SHIM MIRRORS

THIS WAS JUST ONE OF THOSE PINTEREST PROJECTS I JUST HAD TO TRY.  I HAD TWO MIRRORS THAT I PURCHASED YEARS AGO THAT WERE JUST NOT WORKING IN MY SPACE ANYMORE.  I KNEW I WANTED TO TRANSFORM THEM INTO SOMETHING NEW. HERES WHAT THEY  LOOKED LIKE BEFORE.

TO GET STARTED, I NEEDED THE MIRRORS TO HAVE A SMOOTH SURFACE SO I ASKED MY HUSBAND TO PULL OFF ALL THE METAL FLUR DE LIS THAT WERE ATTACHED TO THE BORDERS.  I THOUGHT THAT WAS GOING TO BE AN EASY TASK.  FAT CHANCE! NOTHING CAN EVER GO TOO SMOOTH DURING A DIY.  THANK GOODNESS FOR MY HUBBYS’ MUSCLES.  LOL

I PURCHASED 8” CEDAR WOOD SHIMS AND A GLUE GUN. I CUT THE SHIMS DOWN INTO 3 1/2 INCH PIECES AFTER DECIDING ON A HERRINGBONE PATTERN.  NEXT I FOUND THE CENTER AND CAREFULLY STARTED LAYING DOWN THE FIRST ROW. KEEPING IT STRAIGHT WAS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT WOULD DETERMINE HOW STRAIGHT THE REST WOULD LOOK MOVING FORWARD.

I KEPT REPEATING THE ZIG-ZAG PATTERN UNTIL REACHING THE EDGE. I THEN MARKED IT WITH A PENCIL AND CUT OFF THE OVERLAPPING PIECE USING A PAPER CUTTER.  AFTER I WAS DONE GLUEING DOWN THE LAST PIECE, I WENT OVER ALL THE SHIMS WITH A QUICK SANDING ALL ALONG THE EDGES TO REMOVE ANY SPLINTERS.

I SPENT A TOTAL 0F 50 DOLLARS ON THIS PROJECT. NOT BAD FOR A COMPLETE TRANSFORMATION ON TWO MIRRORS I WAS CONTEMPLATING GETTING RID OF.

HERES WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

WOOD SHIMS

GLUE GUN

FRAMED MIRROR

MEASURING TAPE

SANDING BLOCK

STAIN

PAPER CUTTER

GOOD LUCK IF YOU DECIDE TO TRY IT!
